Biography

Rubin Singer debuted his eponymous collection during New York Fashion Week in February 2007 and has produced nine collections in the years since. With inspiration stemming from his Russian Couture roots, retailers and editors worldwide have heralded Singer’s work.

Singer comes from a dynasty of Russian fashion designers. His father Alik is a third-generation couturier, creating costumes for the Bolshoi Ballet and Stanislavski Theater. His grandfather, for whom he is named, was one of the most celebrated designers in the Soviet Union, dressing the likes of Stalin and Russian royalty.

Singer trained under his father’s watchful eye until he left for university at the prestigious Central St. Martins in London. He later began his career in New York as an Associate Designer at Oscar de la Renta. During his tenure at Oscar, Singer learned the importance of brand identity to a designer label and gained an appreciation for the hard work and integrity necessary to be the person behind the brand. He was then scouted by Bill Blass to be Head Designer of three Blass licensees. In 2005, Singer was hired as the Head Designer of Kai Milla, a company started by the wife of Stevie Wonder, which bears her name. After two years and a successful brand launch, Singer parted ways with the company and shifted his focus to the development of his own collection.

Fast becoming a favorite of celebrity stylists, editors and socialites alike, Singer’s designs are worn by Glenn Close, Beyoncé, Lucy Liu, Heidi Klum, Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah, Shakira, Kelly Rowland, Lea Michele and Iman, among others.  His clothes have graced the pages of Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, L’Officiel   Paper Plains, V,  Black Book, Ocean Drive, Zink, New York Magazine, The New York Times, The LA Times, and most recently the cover of WWD for the second time in his career.

Rubin Singer has been sold in fine specialty stores throughout the world. Most notably: Harvey Nichols, Al Ostoura, Pois, Mimosa, Vakko, Podium, Coplon’s, Ultimo, Saks Jandel, Bellhaus to name a few.  For Spring 2011, Rubin Singer has created an exclusive line of couture eveningwear which is now available at Neiman Marcus nation-wide.

Singer’s collections are produced with couture precision. His work features angular cuts, strong proportions and bold, original prints. Accordingly, Singer says, “My customer demands both seriousness and whimsy; characteristics that are not bound by age, size or geography but more by an innate sense of self. My goal is to empower women.”
